In Measuring Overall Health System Performance for 191 Countries, the World Health Organization published their most recent rankings comparing healthcare systems around the world. Improvement in the health of the population, responsiveness to the expectations of the population, and fairness in financing were just a few of the aspects compared between countries. Spain’s healthcare system was ranked an impressive number 7 in the world while the United States was ranked number 37. When compared to the World Health Organization rankings from 1993-1997, Spain remained consistent while the United States showed great improvement; Spain had been ranked 6th while the U.S. was ranked 67th in the world. The accompanying figure is from the World Health Organization. The countries with higher performing healthcare systems are indicated by a number closest to one and have the darkest blue colors. The countries with lower performing healthcare systems are represented by numbers closer to zero and have colors closest to red.
